Colloquial Hindi and colloquial Urdu share a grammar and a core vocabulary almost completely. A conversation about food or family is the same language written in two scripts. The two diverge as register rises: Hindi reaches for Sanskrit, Urdu for Persian and Arabic.
Hindi uses Devanagari, left to right; Urdu uses a Perso-Arabic script, right to left. This is the most visible difference and the least linguistic one.
The split is bound up with the partition of 1947, with national identity and with religion, and both governments have promoted divergence at the formal end. Describing them as one language or as two are both political statements, and neither is simply a fact.
A learner of Hindi understands spoken Urdu almost immediately and reads none of it. Film dialogue is largely the shared middle register, which is why Bollywood is intelligible on both sides of the border.
