Hungarian verbs have two sets of endings: the indefinite, used with no object or an indefinite one ("a book", "some books"), and the definite, used with a definite object ("the book", "this film", a name, őt). The past tense keeps this split.
| Person | Indefinite: olvasott egy könyvet | Definite: olvasta a könyvet |
|---|---|---|
| én | olvastam | olvastam |
| te | olvastál | olvastad |
| ő / Ön | olvasott | olvasta |
| mi | olvastunk | olvastuk |
| ti | olvastatok | olvastátok |
| ők / Önök | olvastak | olvasták |
Front-vowel verbs follow the same pattern with front vowels: kértem, kérted, kérte, kértük, kértétek, kérték (I asked for it, ...).
The "I" form is the same in both conjugations: Láttam egy filmet (I saw a film) and Láttam a filmet (I saw the film). Everywhere else the two differ, and the third person singular is where you will notice it most:
Ask the same question as in the present: is the object definite? A noun with a/az, a proper name (Látta Pétert), a possessed noun (Láttam a barátodat) or ezt/azt takes the definite forms. Egy + noun, a bare noun, valamit or engem/téged take the indefinite ones.
English speakers, who mark definiteness with "the" and nothing else, tend to fall back on the indefinite -ott/-ett for everything. Listen for the -ta/-te in the third person: it is how Hungarians hear that you mean a particular thing.
