Záporový genitiv a ustálené vazby
The genitive of negation in set phrases (není divu, nemám tušení) and existential negatives (nebylo nikoho)
I can use genitive-of-negation set phrases while keeping normal objects in the accusative.
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Není divu, že je vyprodáno — hraje Česká filharmonie.
No wonder it is sold out — the Czech Philharmonic is playing.
O půlnoci už na náměstí nebylo živé duše.
By midnight there was not a living soul left on the square.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Starší čeština kladla po záporu 2. pád; dnes přežívá v ustálených spojeních:
| Vazba | Význam |
|---|---|
| není divu | no wonder |
| nemám tušení / ponětí | nemám ani představu |
| nebylo by od věci | hodilo by se |
| není pochyb | je to jisté |
| ani slova! | mlč! |
Existenční zápor: Nebylo tam živé duše. Není času nazbyt. Běžný předmět dnes zůstává ve 4. pádě: Nemám čas (ne *času) — genitiv by zněl archaicky.
- Slavic L1 overuse: *Nemám času → Nemám čas
- Set phrases broken: *není div → není divu
Common Error Patterns

není divu: frozen genitive of negation.
