Dative plural endings -ům/-ám/-ím and the irregular lidem/dětem, for giving, helping and saying to groups
I can address, give to and help groups of people using correct dative plural forms.
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
O Vánocích dáváme dárky dětem i sousedům.
At Christmas we give presents to the children and the neighbours.
Průvodce vysvětluje turistům historii Karlova mostu.
The guide explains the history of Charles Bridge to the tourists.
Ke svátkům přejeme kolegyním všechno nejlepší.
On their namedays we wish our colleagues all the best.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
3. pád množného čísla (komu? čemu?) má tři koncovky:

| ženský tvrdý | -ám | ženám, školám |
| měkký | -ím | růžím, židlím, mořím... pozn.: moře je střední – mořím |
Nepravidelné, ale velmi časté: lidem, dětem. Dávám dětem svačinu. Pomáháme sousedům.
- *lidům → lidem, *dětům → dětem
- Feminine -ům: *ženům → ženám
- Singular kept after dative verbs: pomáhám sousedy → sousedům
