Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Ieri ho mangiato una pizza.

I ate a pizza yesterday.

Lei ha capito tutto.

She understood everything.

Abbiamo preso il treno.

We took the train.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Il passato prossimo è il tempo passato più usato nella conversazione. Si forma con l'ausiliare avere o essere + participio passato.

Con avere (verbi transitivi — quelli con complemento oggetto diretto):

Personaparlareprenderecapire
ioho parlatoho presoho capito
tuhai parlatohai presohai capito
lui/leiha parlatoha presoha capito
noiabbiamo parlatoabbiamo presoabbiamo capito
voiavete parlatoavete presoavete capito
lorohanno parlatohanno presohanno capito

Con avere, il participio NON concorda con il soggetto (resta sempre in -o): Maria ha mangiato (non *ha mangiata).

Eccezione: Con i pronomi diretti lo/la/li/le, il participio concorda: L'ho comprata (la gonna), Li ho visti (i ragazzi).

With avere, the participle does NOT change: Maria ha parlato (not *ha parlata). BUT with direct object pronouns lo/la/li/le, agreement IS required. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English past tense is simpler (I spoke, I ate). The auxiliary + participle structure takes getting used to. Choice of avere vs essere is the biggest hurdle.

Common Error Patterns

Making participle agree with subject when using avere

With avere: participle NEVER agrees with subject. Ha mangiato (not *ha mangiata for female). Agreement only with preceding lo/la/li/le.

Using avere as auxiliary when essere is required

Transitive verbs (with direct objects) use avere: ho mangiato, ho visto. Intransitive verbs of movement/change use essere: sono andato.

Ieri ho mangiato una pizza.

I ate a pizza yesterday.

Ho mangiato: avere (ho) + participio regolare (-are → -ato). No agreement.

Lei ha capito tutto.

She understood everything.

Ha capito: avere + participio (-ire → -ito). Even though subject is female, NO agreement with avere.

Abbiamo preso il treno.

We took the train.

Abbiamo preso: avere + participio irregolare (prendere → preso, not *prenduto).
