Present tense conjugation of essere (to be)
Can conjugate essere and use it for identity, origin, profession, and descriptions
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Sono studente.
I am a student.
Lei è di Roma.
She is from Rome.
Siamo stanchi ma contenti.
We are tired but happy.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Essere (essere) è uno dei verbi più importanti in italiano. È irregolare e va memorizzato.

Usi principali:
- Identità: Sono Maria. (Mi chiamo Maria.)
- Nazionalità/origine: Sono italiano. Sono di Milano.
- Professione: Sono insegnante. (senza articolo!)
- Descrizione: È bello. Siamo stanchi.
- Posizione: Il libro è sul tavolo.
Nota: è (con accento) = 'is'; e (senza accento) = 'and'. Non confonderli!
Common Error Patterns
Incorrect form of essere for the given subject
Memorize: sono/sei/è/siamo/siete/sono. Note: io and loro share 'sono'.
Confusing è (is) with e (and)
è (with accent) = is/he is/she is. e (no accent) = and. Always write the accent on è.
Sono studente.
I am a student.
With professions, Italian omits the article: Sono studente (not *Sono uno studente).
Lei è di Roma.
She is from Rome.
Essere + di + city expresses origin: Sono di Milano, È di Napoli.
Siamo stanchi ma contenti.
We are tired but happy.
Essere is used with adjectives for descriptions. Adjectives agree in gender/number with the subject.
