Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Dormo otto ore.

I sleep eight hours.

Capisco l'italiano ma non capisco il tedesco.

I understand Italian but I don't understand German.

Noi finiamo alle cinque e loro finiscono alle sei.

We finish at five and they finish at six.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

I verbi in -ire hanno due sottogruppi: quelli regolari (come dormire) e quelli con l'infisso -isc- (come capire).

Tipo 1: senza -isc- (dormire)

Personadormire
iodormo
tudormi
lui/lei/Leidorme
noidormiamo
voidormite
lorodormono

Tipo 2: con -isc- (capire)

Personacapire
iocapisco
tucapisci
lui/lei/Leicapisce
noicapiamo
voicapite
lorocapiscono

L'infisso -isc- appare solo in io, tu, lui/lei, loro. Noi e voi restano regolari.

Verbi con -isc-: capire (to understand), finire (to finish), preferire (to prefer), pulire (to clean), spedire (to send), costruire (to build).

Verbi senza -isc-: dormire (to sleep), partire (to leave), aprire (to open), sentire (to hear/feel), seguire (to follow), offrire (to offer).

The -isc- pattern must be memorized — there's no reliable rule for which -ire verbs take it. The -isc- appears in io/tu/lui/loro but NOT in noi/voi. 🇬🇧 English speakers: The -isc- infix has no English equivalent. Must memorize which verbs use it. The noi/voi exception (no -isc-) is confusing.

Common Error Patterns

Missing -isc- infix in verbs that require it, or adding it to verbs that don't

Memorize which -ire verbs take -isc- (capire, finire, preferire, pulire) vs which don't (dormire, partire, aprire, sentire).

Adding -isc- to noi or voi forms

Noi and voi NEVER take -isc-: capiamo (not *capisciamo), capite (not *capiscite).

Dormo otto ore.

I sleep eight hours.

Dormire (no -isc-): io dormo. Regular -ire pattern.

Capisco l'italiano ma non capisco il tedesco.

I understand Italian but I don't understand German.

Capire (with -isc-): io capisco. The -isc- infix appears in io, tu, lui/lei, loro.

Noi finiamo alle cinque e loro finiscono alle sei.

We finish at five and they finish at six.

Finire (-isc- type): noi finiamo (NO -isc-!), loro finiscono (with -isc-). Noi/voi never take -isc-.
