Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Maria è andata a Roma.

Maria went to Rome.

Siamo arrivati alle otto.

We (m.) arrived at eight.

È nata nel 1990.

She was born in 1990.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Molti verbi importanti usano essere come ausiliare nel passato prossimo. Con essere, il participio concorda con il soggetto in genere e numero!

andare (M)andare (F)
iosono andatosono andata
tusei andatosei andata
lui/leiè andatoè andata
noisiamo andatisiamo andate
voisiete andatisiete andate
lorosono andatisono andate

Verbi con essere (regola generale: verbi di movimento e cambiamento di stato):

  • Movimento: andare, venire, arrivare, partire, tornare, entrare, uscire, salire, scendere
  • Stato/cambiamento: essere, stare, restare, nascere, morire, diventare, crescere
  • Tutti i verbi riflessivi: alzarsi, lavarsi, vestirsi
With essere, the participle MUST agree: Maria è andata (not *è andato). This is the opposite of the avere rule. 🇬🇧 English speakers: No equivalent in English. Must learn which verbs take essere AND remember to make the participle agree. Double challenge.

Common Error Patterns

Failing to make participle agree with subject when using essere

With essere: participle ALWAYS agrees. Maria è andata (not *andato). Marco e Anna sono andati (mixed group = masculine plural).

Using essere instead of avere, or vice versa

Essere for: movement verbs (andare, venire), state changes (nascere, morire), reflexives (alzarsi). Avere for: transitive verbs (mangiare, comprare, vedere).

Maria è andata a Roma.

Maria went to Rome.

È andata — essere + participle agrees with Maria (feminine singular → andata).

Siamo arrivati alle otto.

We (m.) arrived at eight.

Siamo arrivati — noi (masc. plural) → arrivati.

È nata nel 1990.

She was born in 1990.

Nascere uses essere: è nata (feminine). Born = nato/nata/nati/nate.
