Present Tense: -ere Verbs
Regular -ere verb conjugation (scrivere, leggere, etc.)
Can conjugate regular -ere verbs in the present tense
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Scrivo un'email ogni giorno.
I write an email every day.
Lei legge un libro.
She reads a book.
Loro prendono il treno.
They take the train.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
I verbi in -ere sono il secondo gruppo di verbi regolari italiani. Le desinenze sono simili a quelle dei verbi in -are.

Differenze da -are: 3ª singolare: -e (non -a); 2ª plurale: -ete (non -ate); 3ª plurale: -ono (non -ano).
Verbi -ere comuni: scrivere (to write), leggere (to read), prendere (to take), vedere (to see), vivere (to live), mettere (to put), chiudere (to close), rispondere (to answer), correre (to run), vendere (to sell).
Nota: Molti verbi in -ere sono irregolari al passato prossimo (participio irregolare), ma regolari al presente.
Common Error Patterns
Using -are endings for -ere verbs or vice versa
Key differences: 3rd sg. -e (not -a), 2nd pl. -ete (not -ate), 3rd pl. -ono (not -ano).
Wrong stress in -ere verb forms, especially 3rd plural
3rd plural: stress on STEM. SCRIvono, LEGgono, PRENdono.
Scrivo un'email ogni giorno.
I write an email every day.
Scrivere: io scrivo. Regular -ere conjugation.
Lei legge un libro.
She reads a book.
Leggere: lei legge. Note the double G is maintained throughout.
Loro prendono il treno.
They take the train.
Prendere: loro prendono (-ono). Stress: PRENdono (not *prenDOno).
