Jeden tvar, čtyři funkce:

| ireálnost minulá | Byl bych to stihl, nebýt zácpy. |
| výtka / doporučení | Měl by sis odpočinout. Neměl jsi to říkat. |
měl bys + infinitiv = doporučení (you should); měl jsi + infinitiv = výtka do minulosti (you should have). To bych řekl! = rozhodný souhlas.
