Futur I & II
Future tenses: werden + Infinitiv (I) and werden + Partizip II + haben/sein (II)
Can express future plans and completed future actions
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Ich werde nächstes Jahr nach Japan reisen.
I will travel to Japan next year.
Er wird wohl krank sein.
He is probably sick.
Bis morgen werde ich die Arbeit geschrieben haben.
By tomorrow I will have written the paper.
Sie wird das schon gewusst haben.
She probably already knew that.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Futur I (werden + Infinitiv): future plans, predictions, and assumptions about the present.

| er wird machen | sie werden machen |
Futur II (werden + Partizip II + haben/sein): assumptions about the past or completed future.
| Er wird das gemacht haben. | (He will have done that.) |
| Sie wird angekommen sein. | (She will have arrived.) |
Important: Futur I often expresses assumption, not just future: Er wird wohl krank sein (He is probably sick — assumption about now).
Futur II for past assumptions: Er wird das wohl vergessen haben (He probably forgot that).
- Overusing Futur I for future: German often uses present + time word: Ich fahre morgen (not: Ich werde morgen fahren).
- Missing haben/sein in Futur II: ✗ wird gemacht (= passive!) → ✓ wird gemacht haben.
- Ignoring assumption meaning: Er wird 30 sein often means 'He's probably 30' (now).

Incorrect verb ending for the subject
Review verb conjugation tables and practice matching endings to pronouns
Forgot stem vowel change in irregular verbs
Practice stem-changing verbs (e→i, e→ie, a→ä) with flashcards
Verb placed in wrong position
Remember: V2 in main clauses, verb-final in subordinate clauses
Ich werde nächstes Jahr nach Japan reisen.
I will travel to Japan next year.
Futur I: werden + reisen (future plan).
Er wird wohl krank sein.
He is probably sick.
Futur I for present assumption. Wohl reinforces.
Bis morgen werde ich die Arbeit geschrieben haben.
By tomorrow I will have written the paper.
Futur II: werden + Partizip II + haben.
Sie wird das schon gewusst haben.
She probably already knew that.
Futur II for past assumption.
