Using möchten to express wishes politely
Can express polite wishes and requests with möchten
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Ich möchte einen Kaffee, bitte.
I would like a coffee, please.
Möchtest du mitkommen?
Would you like to come along?
Wir möchten bitte bezahlen.
We would like to pay, please.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Möchten (would like) drückt höfliche Wünsche und Bitten aus. Es ist die Konjunktiv-II-Form von mögen.

Als Modalverb: Das zweite Verb steht am Ende als Infinitiv: Ich möchte einen Kaffee trinken.
Auch ohne Infinitiv: Ich möchte einen Tee, bitte. (Das Verb haben/trinken ist impliziert.)
Möchten vs. wollen: Möchten ist höflich, wollen ist direkt. Im Restaurant: Ich möchte die Suppe (höflich), nicht Ich will die Suppe.
