Can form present-tense sentences without 'to be' and use the dash convention
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Я студе́нт.
I am a student.
Москва́ — столи́ца Росси́и.
Moscow is the capital of Russia.
У меня́ есть соба́ка.
I have a dog.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
В русском языке глагол «быть» в настоящем времени опускается!

Когда «быть» используется:
- Прошедшее: Я был студе́нтом.
- Будущее: Я бу́ду врачо́м.
- Конструкция: У меня́ есть кни́га.
- Тире (—) заменяет «есть» между существительными: Москва́ — столи́ца.
Я студе́нт.
I am a student.
No 'to be' in Russian present tense. NOT *Я есть студент.
Москва́ — столи́ца Росси́и.
Moscow is the capital of Russia.
A dash (—) replaces 'is' between two nouns.
У меня́ есть соба́ка.
I have a dog.
'Есть' IS used in the 'I have' construction (У меня есть).
