Классы глаголов на -ся
Five -ся jobs: true reflexive (умываться), reciprocal (обниматься), passive (строится), middle (дверь открывается), emotional (радоваться)
I can classify -ся verbs by function and respect their case restrictions.
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Они познакомились в очереди за квасом и с тех пор переписываются.
They met in the kvass queue and have been writing to each other ever since.
Осторожно, ёлочные игрушки бьются - они ещё бабушкины.
Careful, the tree ornaments are fragile - they're still grandma's.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
-ся - пять ролей:

После -ся винительный запрещён: *бояться маму → бояться мамы. Ловушка: собака кусается - не пассив, а свойство.
- Accusative after -ся: *бояться маму → мамы
- собака кусается read as passive: it's a property

-ся verbs reject accusative: бояться кого/чего
Middle -ся read as passive
кусается, бьётся: property readings
Они познакомились в очереди за квасом и с тех пор переписываются.

познакомились + переписываются: reciprocal -ся.

бьются: middle voice property, not passive.
