(důraz na Petr = Petr wrote it)

Learners place clitics in wrong positions and don't exploit word order for emphasis. 🇺🇦 Ukrainian speakers: Ukrainian flexible word order helps, but the Czech clitic cluster rules are stricter than Ukrainian. Special attention needed for clitic ordering. 🇩🇪 German speakers: German V2 rule (verb in second position) partially prepares learners, but Czech puts CLITICS (not the main verb) in second position. This causes confusion.

Типові помилки

Placing a clitic (se, si, jsem, jsi, by, mu, mi) outside of second position

Clitics ALWAYS go in second position: after the first stressed word or phrase. Petr se učí. Včera jsem byl doma.

Applying L1 word order rules instead of Czech information structure

Czech puts known/old information first and new/emphasized information last. SVO is default but flexible for emphasis.

Petr se učí česky.

Petr is learning Czech.

The reflexive clitic se must be in second position, after the first stressed element (Petr). Not *Petr učí se česky.

Včera jsem byl v Praze.

Yesterday I was in Prague.

Jsem (clitic of být) goes to 2nd position after včera. The subject já is dropped (pro-drop). Not *Včera byl jsem.

Ten dopis napsal Petr.

It was Petr who wrote that letter.

New/emphasized information goes last: Petr is the focus (who wrote it). Default: Petr napsal ten dopis (neutral).
