Zkrácené tvary (hovorově): byls = byl jsi, bylas = byla jsi. V psané češtině se preferuje plný tvar.
Zápor: nebyl/nebyla/nebylo/nebyli: Nebyl jsem doma. Nebyla tam.
Otázka: Inversí nebo intonací: Byl jsi v Praze? Byla jste spokojená?
Learners confuse the double auxiliary problem — byl IS the participle, jsem IS the auxiliary. They are not redundant.
Časté chyby
Dropped the auxiliary jsem/jsi/jsme/jste with byl/byla in 1st or 2nd person
Byl/byla is the participle, jsem/jsi is the auxiliary — both are needed: Byl jsem (not *Já byl). Only 3rd person drops the auxiliary.
Used wrong gender form of byl (e.g., *Ona byl instead of Ona byla)
Match the participle to the subject: byl (he), byla (she), bylo (it), byli (they masc.), byly (they fem.).
Včera jsem byl nemocný.
Yesterday I was sick.
Byl jsem (masc.) — both the participle byl AND auxiliary jsem are required in 1st person.
Kde jsi byla celý večer?
Where were you all evening?
Byla jsi (fem.) — the participle agrees with the subject's gender. Question formed by inversion.
Oni nebyli na schůzce.
They were not at the meeting.
Nebyli — negation prefix ne- attaches to the participle. No auxiliary in 3rd person plural.
