Learning Goal

Exam Skills:ReadingWriting

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Celý večer jsem psal domácí úkol. Nakonec jsem ho napsal.

I was writing homework all evening. In the end I finished it.

Každý den kupuju chleba. Dnes jsem koupil i máslo.

I buy bread every day. Today I also bought butter.

Můžeš mi uvařit kávu? — Právě vařím čaj.

Can you make me a coffee? — I'm making tea right now.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Čeština rozlišuje dva slovesné vidy: nedokonavý (imperfektivní) a dokonavý (perfektivní).

Nedokonavý (proces)Dokonavý (výsledek)Význam
dělatudělatdělat / udělat
psátnapsatpsát / napsat
čístpřečístčíst / přečíst
vařituvařitvařit / uvařit
kupovatkoupitkupovat / koupit
říkatříci/říctříkat / říci

Kdy použít který vid?

  • Nedokonavý: průběh, opakování, obecná činnost: Včera jsem psal dopis. (byl jsem v procesu psaní)
  • Dokonavý: dokončená, jednorázová akce: Včera jsem napsal dopis. (dopis je hotový)

Tvorba: Nejčastěji předponou: dělat → udělat, psát → napsat. Někdy změnou kmene: kupovat → koupit.

Practice Exercises
Learners use only imperfective verbs (which they learn first) and never switch to perfective for completed actions. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English has no grammatical aspect pairs — progressive (was writing) vs simple (wrote) is similar in meaning but structurally different. Speakers struggle to choose between dělal and udělal.

Common Error Patterns

Used imperfective where perfective is needed (or vice versa) for completed vs ongoing action

Ask: Is the action completed with a result? → perfective (napsal, udělal). Is it ongoing, repeated, or habitual? → imperfective (psal, dělal).

Used a wrong perfective partner for an imperfective verb (or vice versa)

Learn aspect pairs together: dělat/udělat, psát/napsat, číst/přečíst, kupovat/koupit. Check a dictionary for the pair.

Celý večer jsem psal domácí úkol. Nakonec jsem ho napsal.

I was writing homework all evening. In the end I finished it.

psal (imperfective) = process/duration. napsal (perfective) = completed result. Same verb pair: psát/napsat.

Každý den kupuju chleba. Dnes jsem koupil i máslo.

I buy bread every day. Today I also bought butter.

kupuju (imperfective) = habitual/repeated. koupil (perfective) = one-time completed purchase. kupovat/koupit pair.

Můžeš mi uvařit kávu? — Právě vařím čaj.

Can you make me a coffee? — I'm making tea right now.

uvařit (perfective) = request for completed result. vařím (imperfective) = action in progress right now.
