Kondicionál minulý
The past conditional byl bych udělal for unreal past situations, and how spoken Czech replaces it with the present conditional
I can express unreal past conditions and recognize both the full and the colloquial pattern.
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Kdybych byl věděl o koncertě dřív, byl bych koupil lístky.
If I had known about the concert earlier, I would have bought tickets.
Nebýt deště, byli bychom vyrazili na Karlštejn.
If it had not been for the rain, we would have set out for Karlštejn.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Kondicionál minulý = byl bych + l-ové příčestí — děj, který se v minulosti nestal:

| byla by bývala… | (knižní zesílení s bývat) |
V běžné řeči se dnes většinou nahrazuje kondicionálem přítomným + časovým kontextem: Kdybys mi včera zavolal, přišel bych. Minulý tvar zní formálně či knižně, ale v psaném projevu a u zkoušek se očekává.
- Doubling bych: *bych byl bych → byl bych
- Clitic order: *Bych byl přišel → Byl bych přišel
- kdyby past: kdybys byl zavolal (byl after the kdyby form)
