The -ávat/-ívat iteratives as a third aspect layer: nostalgic habituality (chodíval, říkávala) and formation
I can use iteratives for habitual and nostalgic past meaning and form them productively.
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Dědeček sedával večer na zápraží a vyprávěl o vojně.
Grandpa used to sit on the doorstep in the evenings, telling stories about the army.
V téhle hospodě bývávalo plno už od poledne.
This pub used to be packed from noon onwards.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Nad dvojicí nedokonavé/dokonavé stojí opakovací vrstva:
| Základ | Iterativum | Odstín |
|---|---|---|
| chodit | chodívat | mívával ve zvyku |
| psát | psávat | pravidelně, kdysi |
| říkat | říkávat | babička říkávala… |
| být | bývat | bývalo tu jezero |
V minulém čase nesou nostalgii: Chodívali jsme k babičce na nedělní obědy. Zdvojené -váva- ji stupňuje: říkávávala (expresivní).
