Pokud souhlásková skupina → -i/-ej (čti!, dělej!). Záporný imperativ: ne- + imperativ: Nedělej to! Nemluvte!

Zdvořilý příkaz: Pro zdvořilé žádosti se často používá prosím: Řekněte mi to, prosím.

Learners form imperatives from the infinitive instead of the 3pl present stem, and forget stem alternations. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English imperatives are just the base verb ('Go!', 'Write!'), so the Czech system of deriving from 3pl stem with three person forms feels overly complex.

Common Error Patterns

Formed imperative from infinitive stem instead of present tense 3pl stem

Always derive the imperative from the 3rd person plural present: they do X → do X! (oni dělají → dělej!)

Wrong imperative ending (-i vs zero vs -ej)

Single consonant stem → zero ending (mluv!). Consonant cluster → -i or -ej (čti!, dělej!). Add -me for 1pl, -te for 2pl.

Počkej na mě!

Wait for me!

2sg imperative of počkat (perfective): počkej! From 3pl počkají → počkej.

Pojďme do kina!

Let's go to the cinema!

1pl imperative for suggestions: pojďme! (let's go). Irregular form from jít.

Nemluvte tak hlasitě, prosím.

Please don't speak so loudly.

Negative imperative: ne- + mluvte (2pl). Prosím softens the command.
