English verbs barely change: I work, you work, he works. A Czech verb has a different ending for each person, which is why Czechs can drop já, ty and the rest. The friendliest pattern belongs to dělat (to do, to make), and most verbs ending in -at follow it.
| Person | Ending | dělat - do | čekat - wait | znát - know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| já | -ám | dělám | čekám | znám |
| ty | -áš | děláš | čekáš | znáš |
| on / ona / ono | -á | dělá | čeká | zná |
| my | -áme | děláme | čekáme | známe |
| vy | -áte | děláte | čekáte | znáte |
| oni / ony / ona | -ají | dělají | čekají | znají |
Take off -at, add the ending. Many first-week verbs work this way: snídat (have breakfast), hledat (look for), poslouchat (listen), volat (call), dát si (have, order: Dám si kávu). Snídám rohlík s máslem. Hledám Karlův most. Znáš Krtečka?
The infinitive is a good guess, not a guarantee. Some very common -at verbs go their own way, and you simply learn their já form with them: psát - píšu (write), brát - beru (take), spát - spím (sleep), hrát - hraju (play), plavat - plavu (swim). Dictionaries give this form for exactly that reason.
The long á runs through every form, and it is not stressed: say DĚ-lám, stress on the first syllable, then hold the á. English speakers tend to shorten unstressed vowels, which turns dělám into something closer to "delum".
Watch "they": oni dělají ends in -ají, a different ending from oni mluví in the -it group, so do not mix the two.
And learn čekat with its preposition. English "wait for" tempts you towards pro, but Czech waits "on": Čekám na tramvaj. - "I'm waiting for the tram." *Čekám pro tramvaj is simply wrong.
